OCZ Modstream 520W Review - Installation

The OCZ Modstream is designed for quick and easy installation. Before installing the system in your case, you'll need to remove your old power supply from your system; while you are doing this, you will want to look around and see what components need power. In my system I have to provide power to my hard drive and my DVD burner. In addition, my water pump has a sure-start controller which only turns on the pump, it does not power the pump -- but it does power the 3 x120mm fans on the radiator, so I need to find the appropriate length cord, and connectors are needed for installation.

The Modstream has removable power connectors to easily allow you to remove unnecessary cables for a clean install of your power system.

Once you install the power supply into the case and connect all the wires, you are ready to power up the Modstream. Double check to make sure you have connected all of your necessary connectors, flip the switch in the back, and power on your system

The Modstream installed in the system also resembles other components in my system: power cables resemble water tubes, and the Modstream unit itself matches my heat spreaders.

    Results:

The first time I turned on the Modstream, one of the first things I noticed was that the power supply was very quiet. I couldn't hear it at all. Power whisper actually works; the box is very quiet on its own, and will definitely complement a quiet system.

I had also noticed the large blue LED fan in the Modstream. Personally I do not care for lights inside my system; the light intensity is very low, and it will not light your entire system, which is a very good thing in my opinion. You will notice that it is on, though.

    • Gigabyte PCX5750 586/724
    • Samsung Spin point 80GB SATA drive
    • NEC 8x DVD+RW drive
    • 3x120mm Adda 80CFM Fans @ 12v

The 12v rail of the Modstream is a little low, but considering the processor, and the amount of overclocking, this reading is very respectable
