Silex Fingerprint Scanner Review - How does it work?

Before opening the box and pulling out the contents, let's examine how this device helps you secure your data.  First of all, with all of the different USB fingerprint scanners on the market, what makes the Silex FUS-200N any better?  Well, according to Silex, it's these things:

    • Robust and high quality capacitor detection type silicon sensor.
    • Proprietary minutiae matching verification method.
    • Protected user’s privacy.  The minutiae obtained from the fingerprint is compressed and encrypted.  No fingerprint image can be restored from the minutiae data.
    • High degree of accuracy 0.001% FAR (False Acceptance Rate) and 0.1% FRR (False Rejection Rate).
    • 360 degree finger placement support allows flexible fingerprint data entry.

Here’s the authentication process as it is described by Silex:

    1. First, the user places their finger on the scanner.
    2. Then, high accuracy minutiae data is obtained via a proprietary algorithm.
    3. This data is then matched with the registered minutiae data.
    4. If the data is matched, access is permitted.

To the folks at Silex, security doesn’t stop at logging into your desktop.  They offer technologies to help secure all aspects of your data, at work, home, and in public.  The chart below illustrates their vision of secure data.

Okay, now that we have an idea of how the device works, and of Silex’s approach to data security, let's move on.
