    Silex Fingerprint Scanner Review

In today’s world, information is everything. Not only are people working to gather information that is important to them, but some people are working to steal information that belongs to others. This being the case, security is becoming more and more important. A simple password may not be enough to secure your computer anymore, since a little social engineering can be used by hackers to make a pretty good guess on yours. So what other options are there? Today we will be taking a look at one of these options, the Silex Technologies FUS-200N Fingerprint Scanner.

To be honest, I’ve never used a fingerprint reader before, so this review will also address how easy it is for a first timer to install and utilize this device.  In theory, the whole Windows login system is replaced with a fingerprint scan.  Once installed, there will be no way to access your computer via the old user name and password.  In addition, your fingerprint will also be needed to unlock your screen saver.

The included software, the SX-Biometrics Suite, has an additional feature called SX-Pass, which records your login information for applications and websites, and allows them to be entered at the touch of a finger.

According to Silex’s website, here are some of the features of the FUS-200N:

    • Design: Compact and ergonomic design enhances usability.  The area surrounding the sensor helps to lead a finger smoothly to the right position and settle on the sensor comfortably.
    • Fingerprint reader with USB interface: The USB interface allows the user to connect FUS-200N to both desktop PCs and laptop PCs.
    • Minutiae matching: High quality of matching software achieves False Rejection Rate (FRR) of 0.1% and False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of 0.001%. Minutiae data is only used for matching, thus privacy is secured.
