Phiaton MS400 Headphones Review - Well how do they sound?
One word: amazing. These headphones are not your run-of-the-mill headphones available at any local department store.
As I do when I test all audio equipment, I ran the headphones through many different kinds of audio to judge how they responded to each. This included many genres of music, ranging from Broadway musicals to urban funk, from classical overtures to modern alternative rock, from 80s hair bands to piano concertos. Add to this a number of other inputs, like scenes from a dozen movies including the bombing of Pearl Harbor in the movie of the same name and the attack on Minas Tirath in the Return of the King.
The result? The highs and mids were solid and crisp across the board. No matter the genre or source of the audio, these headphones handled the highs and mids to perfection. It's been a long time since just reviewing a product has brought a smile to my face while I'm running it through its paces.
The only part of the audio that was inconsistent was the low end. The bass itself was of solid quality and had a robust sound, but it seemed that the headphones handled the low end a little on the loose side. Some scores sounded precisely like I expected them to, while on others the low end was a little on the weak side. For those who don't care for eardrum-shaking bass, this may actually be an endearing quality.
While I was listening to these, I was able to turn them up to a respectably high level without the people around me even hearing a peep. I attribute this to the thick, soft padding around the ear-cups sealing pretty securely on my ears. I will admit, though, that after a while my ears began to sweat. That's one of the hazards of holding that heat in place, I suppose.

One final note: at the time of this writing, these headphones are priced at approximately $249. This is at the high end for mid-level headphones, but not when it comes to high-quality audio headphones. Since the Phiaton MS400 headphones seem to fit in that area from the perspective of my review, the price is definitely right in line with the product.
And now, to the grading. Here are the pros and cons (or should I call them the highs and lows) for these headphones, as I see them:
Pros:
- Rich, full sound
- Solid construction
- Extremely comfortable
- Fit snugly into its protective carrying case
Cons:
- Dual wire to the ear-cups
- Wire itself has the look and feel of being extremely flimsy
- Expensive for the casual user
- The cable is a little short, requiring an extension if your device isn't very close
Overall, I give these headphones a rating of 8 out of 10, and Dev Hardware's Gold Product Award. A little extra attention to the wires would have driven the score higher, but these headphones are nothing to shake a stick at. These headphones will definitely find a home near my massage chair, so I can immerse myself in quality audio while I relax. For gaming and more casual listening (where I may be a little more rough with my hardware), I'll stick with something a little more rugged and inexpensive.
