NetGear Wireless Digital Music Player MP101 Review - Conclusion
(Page 4 of 4 )
Here are a few items of note that don’t amount to much for themselves, but will cumulatively help you determine whether this is a product for you:
The Good:
- Easy to install, user friendly software.
- Music is crystal clear, without delay.
- Indexing by genre, artist, album, and track name make for an easy-use experience.
The Bad:
- Windows only. Not for members of the Cult of Mac.
- You can’t create a play list which includes files from both your hard drive and the Rhapsody music service; the device won’t switch back and forth between the two seamlessly.
A couple of notes on design: the location of the headphone jack is on the back of the unit, instead of the more convenient (and obvious) front-side placement. Likewise, buttons in front of the unit would be helpful, so that you don’t have to use the remote when you’re right in front of it. Both changes could greatly improve the user friendliness of this unit.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, this is simply a wonderful product -- when it works. You just have to get passed the little problems that you encounter with this thing with the configuration of the box, the network, and the software on your computer.
I advise you to not try to set this up if you are having a stressful day and don’t want to have to deal with any more problems. After some testing, the player would work as far away as around 90 feet from the PC. Of course, this all depends on what kind of walls you have in your home. All of these things have to be taken into consideration when setting up the box. And remember that the position of the box matters.
Overall, I found this to be a nifty little addition to my electronics collection, and will be used often on those stressful days. If you get this product, a good way to test strong signal points in your home or building is to use a laptop connected to your wireless network and walk around until you find a good strong signal. With that, I’m going to go over to the couch, munch on some more cheesy pooffs, and enjoy a bit of music. Take care.
