Logitech MX1000 Review - Moving the mice

Using it on various surfaces was the most interesting part. Obviously on mousepads it was nothing truly spectacular compared to the other options. Better? Yes, but in normal 2D mousing around, it was the extra functionality like the fast scroll buttons and application switch button that made the difference, and of course that tilting scroll wheel.

I definitely noticed extra precision while working in Solid Edge. Getting hooked onto that exact co-ordinate was no longer a touch and go, sweat inducing affair. It was light years beyond an old ball mouse I had for comparison, and better than both other opticals, but the difference there was less obvious...until we got off of that fabric and foam mousepad.

I prefer to work from the desk's surface itself. On my desk, the older two optical mouses seemed fine...until using the MX1000. Apparently it's not just all talk about reading off of a lacquered desk. The motion was a lot smoother, especially when trying to get pinpoint accuracy on a part. Just for fun, I also got out a clear piece of plastic. I figure it's a decent representation for someone using a clear glass desk or table with the mouse, as you might if you had this for a home theatre setup in your living room. The two older optical mice wouldn't even move. I decided to try making some MSPaint art, just to see the difference.

    Cordless Mouseman Optical

As you can see, the Cordless Mouseman Optical accomplished next to nothing. I was surprised I managed to make even those lines. The MX1000 tracked perfectly. The drawing shows off my elite Paint skills rather than indicating a problem with the mouse. So if it can track on clear plastic, can you imagine what it will do on your desk surface?

So lets go over what we've got for this latest device from Logitech.

    Pros

    • Wireless, with cord performance
    • Battery life, compared to AA's
    • "All I want is a mouse with a frickin' laser beam attached to it's belly"

    Cons

    • If battery does go, you're fskd
    • It's not cheap; they make you pay for mousing heaven
    • Righties only, regardless of what the driver says
