Icy Dock MB452 Review - Conclusions

The Icy Dock MB452 is a well made drive enclosure.  I found that it kept the drive nice and cool, even when I left it on for a few days in a row.  The all aluminum construction was solid, and the drive tray fit into the enclosure and fastened down tightly.  The access speed was nothing to write home about, but I’m sure with an e-SATA connection that would improve.

Here are the ups and downs for the Icy Dock MB452:

    Ups:

    • All aluminum construction
    • Use either USB2.0 or e-SATA interface
    • Easy setup and usage
    • Allows you to move data from pc to pc easily
    • Key requirement keeps people from using and snooping at your data

    Downs

    • No e-SATA converter included
    • Packaging is flimsy, and could allow damage in shipping

To be honest, if Icy Dock had included an e-SATA converter, so we could have converted an internal SATA plug into an e-SATA, it would make the whole package much more appealing.  Most new PCs utilize SATA, and many of them have open SATA connectors on the motherboard that go unused.  On the other hand, not many new machines have an e-SATA interface waiting to be utilized.  Other manufacturers of similar hardware include such an adapter, and doing so would make this ‘high speed’ nature of this device usable.  At a street price of approximately $65 at the time of this writing, it’s a little expensive for a USB enclosure, but the e-SATA functionality would definitely make it worth the price.

With this in mind, I give this product a rating of 7 out of 10. At its core, the MB452 is a great product, but Icy Dock needs to give it a small boost in the right direction.  More secure packaging and an included adapter would allow its users to actually utilize the advertised features without the need to buy a special adapter card.

I would like to thank Icy Dock for sending us the MB452 for review.  If you have any other questions about the MB452, visit Icy Dock’s website at http://www.icydock.com/product/mb452.htm.
