HP Photosmart A626 Compact Travel Printer - Compact Design

    Compact Design

Of course, the A626 is designed to be small and compact, but it is not small enough to fit into most bags. HP has added a nice handle to the top of the device for carrying, which makes it look almost like a small stereo boom box. The A626 is very portable and easy to carry along while traveling thanks to the small stature of the device. The overall dimensions of this printer are 5.2 x 9.9 x 4.6 inches, and it weighs only 3.4 pounds. If you choose to add the rechargeable battery, available from HP direct ($49.99), it will add an additional 8 ounces to the total weight.

Once the front panel of the A626 is flipped down, you can see the four memory card slots and a PictBridge USB port. The A626 is also Bluetooth compatible, although this is not functional without an additional Bluetooth adapter. Just plug the adapter into the PictBridge port, and you have yourself a Bluetooth compatible printer.

The rear of the device sports the vertically aligned paper tray, which will hold up to 20 pieces of photo paper. The bottom of the paper tray will adjust between 4-5 inches in order to accommodate various sizes of paper. The A626 is not designed to carry paper internally like its big brother, the HP A826.

The large 4.8 inch touch-screen LCD display is bright and colorful; it is mounted on a movable panel which allows you to adjust the viewing angle. The touch-screen display works well with either a finger or the included stylus. There is a stylus holder next to the display.

The GUI used in the A626 is great. It makes it very easy to use the internal menus and editing systems. The LCD screen will display up to four thumbnails at a time, and they can easily be edited by just pressing on the thumbnail. The bright and colorful icons make this printer very easy to use.

HP uses a three-color ink cartridge in this printer. The colors used are cyan, magenta, and yellow. Having no black ink may hurt the grey scale and shadowing accuracy. The ink cartridge is easy to install, and the printer even shows you exactly where to put the cartridge via the LCD display.

In my opinion, the most impressive thing about the HP A626 is the fact that you have the ability to operate it wirelessly. Granted, you do need to purchase the optional battery and Bluetooth adapter. Still, this is a huge advantage over other printers which have wires hanging everywhere.
