Epson P5000: 80 GB Multimedia Device - Conclusion
(Page 4 of 4 )
Conclusion
I have found that the Epson P5000 can be a great tool for a professional photographer. I recommend it for this group, because it does such a good job of displaying ultra-high resolution photos on its great quality 4 inch LCD display. The ability to zoom in on images to check for flaws is a great tool for photographers. An 80 GB hard drive is large enough to hold thousands of images, video, or music files.
While I recommend this device for professional photographers, I don't recommend it for someone looking for just a multimedia player. This device is not designed to be a music/video player, although it will play these types of files. You would be much better off going with a device that is designed specifically for playing music and video.
The P5000 doesn't offer many compatible music formats, and the built-in speaker offers less than stellar sound quality. If you need another reason to not buy this device as a multimedia device, just look at the high price tag. You can expect to spend between $500-$699 for one of these devices, so it's not cheap by any means. For that price, you can pick up an 80 GB Apple iPod or an iPod Touch.
What's in the Box
Epson has included the "travel pack" with the purchase of the P5000, which is not included with the purchase of the P3000. The "travel pack" is an $80 value, so it's a good value to get it for free with the purchase of the P5000. The "travel pack" includes most of the items listed above.
The rechargeable battery included with the purchase of a P5000 will give the device between 3 and 5 hours of power, depending upon usage.
Final Thought
Although I like the Epson P5000 as a tool for professional photographers, I do think that Epson needs to improve upon some things in its successor. For starters, the processor is not exceptionally fast. The P5000 takes longer to transfer files than a typical computer would. Epson did improve the processor performance when comparing the P5000 with its predecessor, but they still have a ways to go.
Another feature that this device lacks is the ability to edit photos within the device. Newer technology is offering touch-screen interfaces, and better editing options. I think that Epson will need to consider some type of editing capabilities in the P5000's successors, and possibly even a touch-screen interface.
