Epson P5000: 80 GB Multimedia Device - Design

    Design

The P5000 is designed to replace the need for a laptop at photo shoots. This device is relatively small and compact, making it easier to carry around than even the smallest laptops. The overall dimensions of the P5000 are 3.5 x 5.9 x 1.3 inches, and it weighs in at about 1 pound. It is made of a black plastic material, which gives it a rather plain look.

On top of the device, you will find the two slots for storage media. The P5000 accepts both SD (SDHC) and CF cards, and will accept other formats with an additional adapter (not included). Also on top of the device is a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the left side of the device is where you will find all of the connectivity options. There is an A/V out and two USB 2.0 ports. The A/V out can be used to connect the P5000 to a TV or computer monitor in order to view photos or video on the larger screen. The USB ports can be used to directly connect the P5000 to a compatible printer in order to print photos. The other side of the device sports the power button and the hold button.

The remaining controls are located next to the LCD display. There are zoom controls, a rocker switch, menu, display, and back controls. The button configuration is set up well, and it's easy to operate the device with two hands.

The heart and soul of the Epson 5000 is its 4 inch LCD screen. This display uses low temperature polysilicon TFT technology. The 4 inch display is an upgrade from its predecessor's 3.8 inch screen. The maximum resolution of this display is 640 x 480, and there are over 16 million colors available. The user has the option of calibrating the screen to Adobe RGB colors or sRGB colors. The display will give you a much more accurate reproduction of images than a typical DSLR screen will. Epson says that the P5000 is the first device of its kind to feature a four-color filter system, which gives the device amazing color reproduction and clarity.

All of the reviews that I have read about the Epson P5000 have raved about the great quality LCD display. They all seem to agree that the P5000 has one of the best, if not the best, LCD displays on the market for a device of this kind. So for a professional photographer looking for the best quality multimedia storage viewer, the high price tag of the P5000 may be worth it.
