Altec Lansing inMotion Speaker System - Design and Features
(Page 2 of 4 )
The set's portability and attractive design struck me first. With its aesthetically pleasing model and ability to be folded in half and taken on the road, the InMotion catches the eye right away.
Any normal consumer would like to get a few extra goodies inside the box as well, so he/she doesn't feel as bad spending $150 on a set of speakers meant for a $400 MP3 player. So the set comes with some useful accessories: a mini 1/8" cable to interconnect it with an external source is a great idea (unfortunately it's only a few inches long); a few adapters in the box that allow you to use a mini Apple iPod in it's cradle securely; a bag to carry the set (a thoughtful idea, since portability is the key design feature of these speakers); and an AC adapter, so you can charge your iPOD and won't have to keep wasting batteries while trying to listen to your music.

The InMotion speaker set is not only meant to be used with an iPod. The little jumper cable that comes inside the box allows you to connect the set to any external music source with a headphone jack, like a tape or a CD player. This broadens the market for this product a little, since not all of us own an iPod and prefer other brands of MP3 players that are cheaper, bigger and less attractive.

The dock in the middle of the set accepts all Apple iPOD players and allows you to do the following while having the player connected:
- Play music through the internal speakers.
- Charge your iPOD.
- Play from an external source connected to the input jack.
- Transfer files while connected to a PC through an expansion connector on the back of the set.
- Raise/lower the volume.
- Continue to operate the iPOD by using the controls on the iPOD itself.
- Use the output jack to connect to another music system for playback recording.

As you see from the features listed above, it starts to look pretty good, especially since you can charge your iPOD on the cradle while playing the songs or even use the set as your PC speakers when hooked up to the sound card.

The set can fold up easily to the dimensions of a small paperback book, which you can put in the supplied carrying bag and take with you on the road. You can still use the set while it's folded up, but the sound barely comes out that way.

Silver aluminum drivers look great with the set’s white-on-silver scheme. When used with the iPOD in the cradle, the piece looks like it was designed together with the iPOD by Apple.
SO now that we see that the speakers are loaded with good features and look absolutely in tune with the iPOD design, let's see if the sound is worthy of Altec's reputation.
