The NBA regular season is just around the corner, and there is plenty of excitement in the air. Until regular season actually tips off, you can satisfy your fix for professional basketball with the release of NBA 2K11 for the PS3. Keep reading for a closer look.
Although many basketball titles in the past may have left you underwhelmed by gameplay and AI that seemed too easy to overcome, NBA 2K11 has something else in store. It combines superb gameplay, presentation, and fun into one package that will have you playing virtual basketball until your fingers cramp.
When you look at the cover of the game and see the great Michael Jordan, you eyes may do a double take. After all, he has been retired for a long time now, and he rarely made appearances in basketball simulations even when he was active in the league.
Luckily, NBA 2K11 injected him into the gameplay this time around from the very start. When you pop the game in for the first time, you get transported back to Game 1 of the 1991 NBA Finals as the Chicago Bulls take on the Los Angeles Lakers, where he takes on Magic Johnson and company. Getting to play as Jordan himself is a nice blast from the past, and really kicks the game off in high gear.
The opening game versus the Lakers as Jordan is not some quick promo, however. In fact, there is an entire mode dedicated to great games of the past called the Jordan Challenge. In this mode, you will play as Jordan in ten of his most memorable games. You will take on teams that stood in his way such as the Celtics, Knicks, Hawks, Trailblazers, and more.
Of course, taking on these teams also will bring back memories, as you will see former greats such as Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler, Dominique Wilkins and more. In each game of the Jordan Challenge, you can only win the game by at least matching Jordan's actual stats from the game as it happened in real life. For instance, against the Knicks, you will have to score 55 points with Jordan to win. Against the Utah Jazz, you will need a stat line of 38 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.
If you fail to get the needed stats, you will have to start the game over in the first quarter. If you successfully win the 10 games by reaching the statistical milestones, you will be awarded with a Jordan-themed version of the My Player mode. Once there, you can start with Jordan as a rookie on any NBA team and see if he still has what it takes to dominate the league. While the Jordan Challenge may seem gimmicky to some, it's definitely a unique and refreshing twist to a solid basketball simulation that many NBA fans will love.
