Vancouver 2010: The Official Video Game of the Winter Olympic Games - The Events
(Page 2 of 4 )
However, while Vancouver 2010 does allow you to replicate the action seen on TV, it does so in too much of a limiting manner. Its omission of certain events and repetitive gameplay make it a bit of a disappointment for those inspired by the real thing on television. Thus, whether or not you want to spend the required $50 on this title will really depend not only on your disposable income, but also how badly you want a piece of the snowy action.
You get fourteen events in all in which to hone your skills. In Alpine Skiing, you have the Menís Downhill, the Menís Super G, the Ladiesí Giant Slalom, and the Ladiesí Slalom. In Ski Jumping, you have the Menís Individual Large Hill. The Ladiesí Ski Cross and the Ladiesí Aerials are available in Freestyle Skiing. Snowboarding offers the Menís Parallel Giant Slalom and the Menís Snowboard Cross. The Ladiesí 500 Meter and 1,500 Meter are two Short Track Speed Skating options. There is also the Two Man Bobsleigh, the Menís Skeleton, and the Menís Singles Luge.
While that seems like a decent number of events to partake in, it really isnít. First of all, many of the events mirror each other in terms of similarity and gameplay, making many of them seem repetitive. How much of going down a mountain slope or around a track can one person take before getting bored?
Second, some of the most popular events in the actual Winter Olympics are absent. Where is Hockey? How about the Figure Skating and Nordic Combined events? Even better, where is everyoneís favorite wacky event, Curling?
These omissions really take a lot of the charm out of the game, as the listed absent events are some of the most interesting to watch. Obviously, to create a Hockey event in the video game would take a lot of work, but thereís no excuse to leave off something like curling. It almost seems as if the developers got a little lazy during the gameís creation.
