    SEARCH DEV HARDWARE

Are you a gaming fan looking for something a little out of the ordinary that will help keep you entertained and have you interact with others? If so, Multi User Dungeon (MUD) games may be right up your alley. This article will discuss some of the top MUD games around.

If you are absolutely clueless as to what a Multi User Dungeon or MUD game is, you are probably not alone.  You may have come across such games if you searched online for free internet games, but always wondered what they actually were.  No, they are not like what you typically see being played on a PS3 or Xbox 360.  Instead, they fit nicely into their own little niche that has successfully appealed to a growing number of followers.

Multi User Dungeon games are basically games that deal with role playing and are text-based in nature.  You will not find a lot of phenomenal graphics that will blow you away, so if you are in search of such characteristics, MUD games are probably not for you.  Instead, they allow you to interact with other users from around the world in a manner that exercises your mind and gets your creative juices flowing.  If you have ever read those books as a kid that allow you to determine the ending based on your decisions or actions, think of a MUD game in the same way.

As for themes of MUD games, they tend to differ, but some of what you will find will often deal with the fantasy genre and the like.  Now that you hopefully have a little bit of an idea of what MUD games are, it is time to jump into our list that details some of the top MUD games available on the Web.  So you do not have to worry about losing any money in trying out a totally new gaming genre, all of the games in our list are completely free of charge. Thatís enough of the small talk.  Letís begin.

    DragonStone

DragonStone is a MUD that has been up and running since 1998.  With such a history, you can bet it has been able to develop a solid online community.  With an experience that allows you to go on quests and adventures, explore a fantasy world, and slay monsters, DragonStone takes the genre of MUD gaming to another level.  Role playing is encouraged by its creators, but not necessary.  Still, if you are the creative type who is looking for the perfect MUD game to help expand your mind, you cannot go wrong with DragonStone.

The list of features found in DragonStone is quite impressive.  There are 250 mortal levels in all, over 200 areas, and over 16,000 rooms to enjoy.  To get your adrenaline pumping, there is a player killing and bounty hunter system, ranged weapons, a war system, and arena battles, plus much more.  As far as customizing your experience while playing DragonStone, you have several options.  There are 14 classes, including cleric, thief, warrior, ranger, vampire, and werewolf, among others.  There are also 18 races to choose from, including gnome, dwarf, troll, ghoul, demon, elf, human, etc.  DragonStone has so many features to list, that we cannot fit them all here, so be sure to visit the link below for more information on this MUD game.

    SlothMUD

SlothMUD is a MUD game that has recently been revived.  With over ten years in existence, SlothMUD was created to cater to all of its players, including newbies.  It is not a bad place to start if you are new to MUD gaming, as even members of SlothMUDís community will help you get acquainted.

As for what the game has to offer, you can look forward to eight classes (cleric, thief, monk, warrior, etc.), over 8,500 players and creatures, and over 24,000 rooms.  Thanks to SlothMUDs unique scripting language, players can create areas that are highly interactive.

    Aardwolf

Aardwolf is another popular MUD game.  It uses the fantasy setting of Andolor as its backdrop, and it offers plenty of real estate for players to explore through the use of real geography and numerous continents.  There are over 20 classes to choose from, such as healers, priests, witches, and assassins.  You also have the option to play Aardwolf solo or as part of a group, which should appeal to many looking for flexibility with their MUD gaming experience.

    WaterdeepMUD

WaterdeepMUD is another MUD game that has been entertaining gamers for over ten years.  The creators of WaterdeepMUD stress the gameís intimacy as one of its strong points.  In other words, it eliminates the feeling that sometimes comes along when playing massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs).  The game does this via a solid staff of dedicated members who aim to help players, as well as a large community that has grown over time.

The main storyline fueling WaterdeepMUD deals with the Governmental Wars, which is described as a battle over who controls power and technology.  As this battle goes on, an even bigger threat exists in the form of a meteor that is said to be an outcasted deity.

WaterdeepMUD has its roots in Forgotten Realms and Final Fantasy 6 and 7.  It features 23 races and 7 classes and such things as quests, mini-quests, area quests, gambling, customizable airships and properties, mass arenas, political factions, and more.  As for the backdrop, WaterdeepMUDís world consists of two separate continents and 34,000 rooms.

As you do a little research on your own through internet searches, you should find many more MUD games that you may find appealing.  Hopefully this list gave you a glimpse into some of the options that are out there and will push you into giving this category of gaming a strong look.
