    Sony PSP Go

The PSP Go is the fourth generation of the popular handheld gaming console from Sony. It may have a distinguished pedigree, but does it live up to what we expect from the line? Today we'll take a closer look.

While the Go comes complete with an upgraded design and some new features, is it a worthy purchase for current PSP owners? Better yet, is it a good choice for those in the market for a portable gaming device?

Well, it depends on what you are looking for, but the answer to both might be no, especially in the case of the former, as we will discuss. You can pick up the Go at a retail price of $250, which seems a bit high considering some of its limitations.

The most apparent different between the PSP Go and previous generations is in its design. Sony slimmed down the Go in a dramatic fashion, making it 43 percent smaller than the original PSP. As with many electronic devices new to the market, it seems as though Sony placed a premium on ultra-portability, as the newest PSP can fit comfortably in your pocket.

The device measures 5 inches wide by 2.7 inches tall by 0.7 inch thick in its closed state and weighs 5.6 ounces. The Go has an overall glossy finish throughout its body, with the exception of a matte finish near the controls. Of course, with its glossy finish, you can expect plenty of fingerprints, so if you are not a big fan you might want to get the system in the available white color versus black. For extra grip, there are two rubber nodes on the back of the system to keep your hands from slipping.

The new PSP Go has adopted a slider format, similar to many cell phones, that reveals the gaming controls when the unit is slid upward. When closed, you only see the Go's display, which, unfortunately has shrunk a bit to 3.8 inches diagonally. The half-inch loss in display size from previous generations was a sacrifice for more portability with this generation of the PSP. While the screen is smaller, it is improved in terms of brightness and sharpness of graphics.
