Review of WWE All Stars Video Game

In this video game we pull back the sheets on the new wrestling game, WWE All Stars.

Are you a wrestling fan who always fantasized about how past wrestling legends would fare against today's breed of brash brawlers?  If so, THQ San Diego has answered your prayers with the release of WWE All Stars for the PlayStation 3 and other major consoles.  WWE All Stars release just before Wrestlemania 27 is definitely some smart marketing, and it stands to capitalize on the anticipation of fans all around the globe.  The game reflects its title to a T, as you get to choose from a star-studded cast of WWE wrestlers both past and present.  Do not expect a pure simulation here, as the game caters more to the arcade crowd.  What you can expect is a lot of high-flying fun that is in your face from start to finish.

Without a doubt, the highlight of WWE All Stars is its roster.  You get to choose from a lineup of 30 wrestlers that are divided amongst two generations.  Of course, you may have been able to play with some of the wrestlers on other gaming titles in the past, but the fact that WWE All Stars puts so many of them into one package is what makes it appealing.

The wrestlers are divided into two groups: the WWE Legends and the WWE Superstars.  The Legends include names like Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior, The Rock, Andre The Giant, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Sergeant Slaughter, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, and more.  The Superstars roster includes many of today's greats, such as Undertaker, Big Show, Triple H, Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, and John Cena, plus others.  As you can see from this sampling of the game's roster, the possibilities for matches between yesterday's and today's greats are numerous.  The game touts its slogan as, “The greatest matchups haven't happened, until now!”  Needless to say, such a statement appears to be correct.

Should you choose to fantasize a bit and want to add your own personal wrestler to the game, you can do so with ease.  You can customize your face paint, tattoos, costumes, entrances and moves.

The wrestlers are divided into four differing classes: Acrobats, Grapplers, Brawlers, and Big Men.  As expected, each class has its own strengths and weaknesses.  Wrestlers are placed into the different categories according to their abilities in real life, so if you watch a lot of wrestling, you will know what each can do.

Acrobats will be quicker and can pull off more intense moves, while Big Men bring brute strength to the table.  The different classes bring a slight element of realism and strategy to the game, since we know that no two wrestlers are created equal.  Take a look at the Ultimate Warrior, for example.  He falls into the Brawler category, making him ideal for players who like to use powerful striking moves.  On the flip side is Rey Mysterio, an Superstar in the Acrobat class who uses high flying moves to his advantage.  At only 175 pounds, Rey will be at a disadvantage against larger opponents, but his ability as an Acrobat will allow him to move around the ring with ease.

If you are wondering about signature moves and finishers, WWE All Stars has all bases covered.  The Ultimate Warrior has the Gorilla Press Slam.  The Rock has People's Elbow and Rock Bottom.  You'll get Hulk Hogan's Leg Drop, Undertaker's Chokeslam and Tombstone, John Cena's Attitude Adjustment, and more.
