New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii - Mario Secrets

Besides the game’s difficulty, its bonuses and secret areas should help keep the game playing in your Wii and off the shelf. There are plenty of secret areas in the game, and each level has star coins and red coins that you will want to collect to maximize the gaming experience. You can use your collected star coins to gain access to clips that will give you hints on how to find secret areas. These “Easter eggs” give it great replay value and challenge you to scour every inch of its eight worlds.

Perhaps the best surprise in New Super Mario Bros. is its implementation of a multiplayer mode. Multiplayer mode allows you to play with up to four people in total as the characters of Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, or Yellow Toad. Although each character has its own look, they all have the same abilities in multiplayer.

Multiplayer is a lot of fun and lets you and your friends help each other navigate through the game just as if you were in single player mode. The only difference is the chaos that takes place. You can bounce off other players, pick them up and toss them, and more. While this is a blast, it can take a lot longer to complete the game.

What the multiplayer mode does is add as Wii-ish dimension to the game by allowing more people to get involved in the fun. Even if you have never played, you can join in and be helped out by more experienced players on your household team.

If you want to compete against the others, you can participate in two other multiplayer modes. The first is Free mode, where you still go through the levels but must get the highest score among the other players to win. The second is Coin mode, where you must collect the most coins to win. Unfortunately, multiplayer is not available online, which would have been a great addition to the game.

Whether or not you are a Mario fan, New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii is a great game. It's challenging enough to keep the most skilled players on their toes but also has the Super Guide to help casual gamers get their feet wet. Also, the multiplayer mode is a lot of chaotic fun that should get others into the action. While the lack of an online multiplayer mode or Classic controller support is disappointing, their omission is not enough to prevent this game from being a winner in the fun category.
