Grand Theft Auto IV Review - Game Play

For the most part, the format of GTA IV follows that of its predecessors. There are still those missions consisting of races, taking out enemies, and following predetermined targets for those game players that need their thirst for violence quenched. Several improvements have been added, though, to make game play more enjoyable.

For instance, players now have access to taxis, which can cut down driving time immensely and make it easier to get from place to place. A new targeting system makes shooting much easier as players can lock onto their enemies and rapidly switch from target to target for maximum effectiveness. You can now aim for specific body parts while shooting as well. The only time when this new feature becomes tedious and perhaps ineffective is in close quarters battles, as it is often difficult to grasp your bearings due to the shaky camera work.

Another great tool in GTA IV is a new covering technique similar to that of Rainbow Six: Vegas. This comes in handy when trying to preserve health in intense firefights rather than charging full speed ahead at enemies.

Those that love violence surely will not be disappointed with Grand Theft Auto IV. Designers have stepped up their game by ensuring that players will not see the same death animations repeatedly thanks in part to the use of procedural animation. Among some of the animations seen while playing were wounded cops trying to stop blood gushing from their necks, maimed thugs asking for help while lying in pools of blood, and haunting screams coming from those on the unfortunate receiving end of a Molotov cocktail. This level of detail just adds even more value to GTA IV.

Music lovers will like to know that once again there is a wide range of music in the newest Grand Theft Auto that they can jam out to while using their vehicle of choice. There is something for everyone including techno, rock, reggae, rap, jazz and even big band music for those "older" players.
