This year's E3 show was a great platform for companies to showcase their newest creations to tech fans. As usual, one of the show's highlights was its plethora of game previews that left many gamer's hoping time would fly until their favorite titles' release dates. Here is a sampling of some of the most impressive game showings at E3 2011.
Modern Warfare 3
The Call of Duty franchise has seen immense success in the first-person shooter genre, and the hype for its upcoming Modern Warfare 3 release is massive. With environments such as New York City, Paris, London, and more, it's hard not to get excited about this November 8 release for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 3 should provide for some intense competition in the realm of military shooters. It's set for release on October 25, which might help it gain some loyal followers prior to the release of Modern Warfare 3. A new gaming engine and destructible environments are just two things to look forward to from this highly anticipated title for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
BioShock Infinite
BioShock Infinite piqued the interest of many at E3 with its captivating demonstration. The first-person shooter takes place in a floating city this time around, and it promises to bring superb gameplay and stunning environments to the table. BioShock Infinite appears to be one of the top releases for the coming year, thanks to seamless controls and graphics. Gamers can look forward to the title in 2012 when it is released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
Super Mario 3DS
The Mario franchise has been around forever it seems, and it's not showing many signs of slowing down, either. Portable gamers who are loyal to the series should look forward to the upcoming release of Super Mario 3DS for the Nintendo 3DS platform. Set for a release towards the end of this year, Super Mario 3DS might feel eerily similar to Super Mario Galaxy for some, mixed in with some Super Mario Bros. 3 as well. If you enjoyed the nostalgic flair of other Mario titles, Super Mario 3DS should be right up your alley, as it is said to have plenty of old school tricks up its sleeve in terms of look and gameplay.
Far Cry 3
Fans of the Far Cry series will unfortunately have to wait until 2012 to get their hands on the game's third edition, even though it was initially looking at a late 2011 release. Luckily, it appears as if the long wait will be worth it, as Far Cry 3 was introduced to E3 audiences through a captivating trailer.
Ubisoft promises plenty of new and exciting features in Far Cry 3 that will blend in with some of the franchise's most popular ones to provide the most immersive game experience yet. The game's basic plot line involves protagonist Jason Brody being stranded within a tropical landscape that is loaded with armed enemies. Not a whole lot is known about the game, but one thing is for certain, expect some awesome visuals and plenty of action. Far Cry 3 will be released for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Zelda is another series that seems to have been around since the beginning of gaming time, and it continues its longstanding tradition with the upcoming Skyward Sword release for the Wii gaming console. With great graphics, more precise controls, and new twists, Skyward Sword promises to be one of the top future releases for the Wii. Although it has some tough competition to beat when it comes to its predecessors, this Zelda release looks to have what it takes to become a legend in its own right. Look for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword later this year. Batman: Arkham City
Batman is back again, and fans of the superhero will not want to pass up the upcoming fall release of Arkham City. The entire combat system is said to be improved, and gamers can take to the streets as Catwoman. Villain favorites such as The Penguin and Two-Face will be included in the game as well. Batman: Arkham City will be released for the Wii U, PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 this October.
XCOM
If the whole UFO mystique intrigues you and first-person shooters are your thing, XCOM is one game that you will not want to miss. Slated for a March release next year, the newest XCOM will supposedly blend in some of the original's elements with several modern twists. It also appears to incorporate some RPG elements which should make it appealing to gamers with varying tastes.
The look of the game is quite impressive, and the feeling that you have been transported back to 1962 and the Cold War era is executed to perfection. You'll be in charge of helping defend the United States against an alien invasion, and that brings along plenty of action as well as strategy that should keep your mind and fingers busy. XCOM will be released for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
Resident Evil Revelations
Resident Evil Revelations is another game for the 3DS that impressed at its E3 showing. Planned for release in 2012, this portable horror title delivers all the past Resident Evil goodness and much more in a small package. Expect an original storyline this time around that combines with solid controls for a ton of spooky fun. Graphics are highly impressive, and when you throw in the whole 3D element, you have yourself one game that elevates your visual senses.
NBA 2K12
The NBA Finals have just concluded, so you know basketball has been on the minds of many sport fans as of late. There's little doubt that pro basketball fans look forward to new gaming releases on an annual basis, and NBA 2K12 looks to be a real hit in the making.
Many sports gamers complain about the lack of improvements with yearly franchise releases, but NBA 2K12 appears as if it will not disappoint. Pre-game introductions with action-packed footage, improved character models that include facial expressions, more realistic audiences, and better animation are said to have boosted the game's look. One gameplay highlight that should appease those looking for more of a simulation experience is improved AI when it comes to situational awareness. NBA 2K12 is set to be released next year on multiple gaming consoles.
