Band Hero for the PS3 is Activision’s attempt to win the hearts and minds of a slightly different demographic than in the past. Will it appeal to you? Keep reading as we take a closer look.
While Activision's very popular previous releases of Guitar Hero titles were a hit with fans of the rock genre and its newer release of DJ Hero takes aim at hip hop fans, Band Hero is set to appeal to more of a fluffy crowd. With its set list of mostly Top 40-ish and some older pop songs, and even some overzealous censorship, you can tell that Activision made Band Hero to break away from its Guitar Hero theme to more of an American Idol motif.
While such is the case with the choices of music, it’s not so true when it comes to the gameplay and look of the game, as many might complain that it is just a rehashed version of Guitar Hero 5. That could be true, but in the end, Band Hero is still a solid game for casual gamers and one that can bring families and teeny boppers together for a lot of musical fun. You can pick up Band Hero for the PS3 for $59.99.
Before we hit the gameplay let’s talk about what really differentiates Band Hero from the other previous Activision music game releases: its music. The track list is composed of 65 songs from 63 different artists. Although that number of tracks isn’t extraordinary, it is enough to keep you busy for a while. Mostly pop hits, the songs also span several decades, and are not only limited to today’s hits, meaning even parents can get into the groove with Band Hero.
Some older hits include the Jackson 5’s “ABC,” Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” Pat Benatar’s “Love is a Battlefield,” and the highly noticeable Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” You also get some hits that are not so old, including Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved,” No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” and the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe.” Finally, you get some very recent hits from teen idols like Taylor Swift and Hillary Duff. Other notable artists on Band Hero are Duran Duran, the Rolling Stones, Dashboard Confessional, and Fall Out Boy, to name a few.
As you can see, Band Hero keeps its music range in the pop arena but does a good job of mixing in several decades of work to encourage an older demographic to interact with a younger one, making it an attractive choice for families.
