Age of Conan Review - New Concepts of Combat Extend Game Play
(Page 4 of 4 )

Other differences are the use of mounted combat (war rhinos and armored horses) that is surprisingly realistic. Imagine crashing through groups of people and getting collision damage!
Then there is the concept of battlekeeps. Basically set up as a personal or team fortress, the user is made to set an allotted time for being open for attack, which really takes the heat off for people with other, real-life things to do. And no, you don't actually get to play as Conan, although it's said that one goal is to actually find and visit Conan, busy being the King of Anquilonia.
There is a Player versus Player mode (PvP), a sort of free-for-all battle arena most likely stemming from past Anarchy Online successes. These "mini-games" employ instanced, objective-based battlegrounds or a siege system, in areas designated for player versus player combat. Funcom seems to believe this new combat system, focusing on player versus player, will force gamers to think strategically and place their attacks at specific angles, making it an even more skill-based affair than any before it.
So all in all, I really enjoy playing Age of Conan with my Tribe, or Clan as you might call it. Just as I really enjoyed Asheron's Call, this game seems to have picked up where the others left off, and then took it even further. I would recommend this game to any of age player, especially those looking for the next great game, pushing the boundaries with an "M" rating. Funcom earned and exploited every second of that "M" rating, and I am glad they did, as Age of Conan is fun and exciting, different, and even at times extremely challenging. Do I think it's going to make World of Warcraft go away entirely? I doubt it. But I can see many Warcraft players also playing this one, as it's actually somewhat similar -- at times better, at times worse. But it's a lot of fun.
