Zalman CNPS 7700 ALCU, Zalman VF700 review - Installation

Now, with the incompatibilities behind us, we can set up the back plate and clip support. Align the backplate behind the motherboard and orientate the clip support. You want the lever slot lined up so that you can open and close the socket. Place the clip support over the holes, and install the clip support fixing bolts.

Zalman provides a backplate to reduce stress around the CPU socket due to the weight of the cooler

The clip support allows you to mount the heatsink in many ways. You can mount it vertically or horizontally, depending on whether you have rear case fans, or want to pull heat up from the PSU fan.

    Applying Thermal Grease

As with all processors and heatsinks, you must install thermal paste. The instructions are very clear for the first time users. Clean all particles of dust and dirt off the processor and the heatsink base, then apply a grain of rice sized amount of thermal grease, and spread it out evenly over the CPU with a piece of paper or plastic. This would be the best time to mount the motherboard back into your case.

    Install Grips and Bolts

This is probably one of the more tricky steps. You need to install the correct grips, which interlock with the clip. It’s easier to install the bolt into the grip and then mount it to the clip.

The grips interlock with the clip in the heatsink, and the grip cannot move side to side or down further, only straight up for removal.
