    TESTING:

    As always, I test my heatsinks with no case fans to aid in cooling. A temperature probe was used and was placed close enough to touch the CPU core and not cause any interference between the heatsink and the core. The other temperature probe was placed on the northbridge heatsink. A fresh layer of Arctic Silver II was applied. For comparison, I used a Sunon 80mm fan. The room temperature is kept consistent at 73F with air conditioning on throughout the entire testing procedures.

     

    Test System:

    • Intel Celeron 1700@1870 (17x110)

    • MSI MS-6528 LE

    • 256mb Corsair PC150

    • 512mb Corsair PC133

    • Seagate 20gb Barracuda III

    • Morpheus Geforce 3

    • 3com 905cx NIC

    • Inland 4 channel C-media sound card

    • Pioneer 10x DVD

    • Antec Mini Tower KS382

    • JGE 250watt power supply

     

    Test Fans:

    • Sunon 80mm 36 CFM @ 2800 RPM, 32.5 dBA

    • Zalman 92mm stock fan at 3 different fan speeds

     

    Test Burn-Ins:

    • SETI (15 minutes)

    • Sisoft CPU Burn-In (10 loops)

    • 3dmark2k1se patched (5 loops)

     

    RESULTS:

    W/80mm Sunon Fan

     

     

    The following graphs are for the 92mm Fan running in Silent, Normal and Max Performance modes.

    The Northbridge is kept fairly cool due to the size of the 92mm fan. Its large size completely covers the Northbridge and aids in cooling.


    CONCERNS:

    The only concern I would have would be that the fins might spread out too much and come in contact with other hardware parts in a cramped system, such as memory modules or power supplies.


     

    CONCLUSION:

    Zalman’s intention of making computers silent while under overclocked environments is now very successful. The results prove it all. It even beat out the Swiftech MCX4000 from our last Pentium IV heatsink competition. Yes there can be a few minor differences during testing procedures due to different days of testing, placement of probe, temperature differences, and so on. But I’ve tried to keep everything as close as possible and kept the room temperatures the same. I was so surprised with the results that I spent another day testing out the heatsink. Sure enough, it gave me the same results. What can be said about the Zalman CNPS6500A-Cu? It is the new champ of socket 478 cooling. Not only is it noiseless but it keeps the temperatures low and I mean very low. Coming in at about $50 for a great heatsink and a fan, I would definitely suggest this heatsink for the extreme overclocker.

     

    PROS/CONS:

    Pros: extremely easy to install/remove, excellent cooling performance, great looking for case windows, all copper

    Cons: very heavy, not a great suggestion for LANs, fins may get in the way of other components, may be a bit pricey
