Evercool HDAC, Hard Drive Cooler - Let's Wrap It Up

To be honest, the Evercool HDAC did have a number of small quirks.  Here are a few things I saw while running it through it’s paces:

    • About 50% of the time the small Celsius/Fahrenheit indicator did not display at all.  This isn’t a huge problem, though; I’m sure you could tell by looking at the number which scale was currently set.
    • A couple of times when I booted the box, the backlight and fan came on but no numbers ever showed on the HDAC.  Shutting down and turning it back on did fix the issue, but it was an inconvenience to do so.
    • The front grill is easily removable, and is referred to as a cleanable filter.  The holes in the plastic “filter” are pretty large, and will only stop larger, non-airborne items from entering.  Some sort of “screen” to trap smaller items such as dust or lint would have made this more effective.

It looks like there are a few final touches that Evercool could put on the HDAC to make it perfect, but at the end of the day it did its job, and did it well.  I had a hard drive running at 16 degrees Fahrenheit below what it was running without the HDAC.

So here are pros and cons.

    PROS:

    • Effectively cools your hard drive.
    • Has an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
    • Fan is relatively quiet, except at highest settings.
    • The LCD readout has a backlight that comes on when you press a button, and turns back off after about 20 seconds of no button activity.

    CONS:

    • Small quirks with display.
    • Requires its own power cable, taking up valuable connections.

Overall, I would give this product a rating of 8 on a scale of 1-10.  The product would have recived a higher rating had it not been for the few quirks I found with it.  These did not impair the unit from fulfilling its objective, but would have made a more complete product.  If you are looking for a solution to help keep your system and/or drives cooler, I would definitely recommend this product.
