Easy PC Kits Premium Heatsink Lapping Kit - Results

Install the heatsink back onto the motherboard using the supply of thermal paste.

Once you are finished lapping the heatsink, the first thing you will notice is that the heatsink's base is considerably smoother. All of the major imperfections of the original base have been removed, and now the heatsink can make optimal contact with the processor.

For even better results you can use the kit to lap the Integrated Heat Spreader of the CPU for better contact. This should be left as a last ditch effort to improve temperatures, or overclocking. But now, let’s see how the heatsink performs.

    PC Test Bed

    • Intel P4 505 2.66 GHz @ 20x200 1.28v

    • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 heatsink at 2700RPM

    • Abit AA8 Duramax (droop mod)

    • 2x512MB Wintec PC25400 2.08v

    • Gigabyte PCX5750 586/724

    • Samsung Spin point 80GB SATA drive

    • NEC 8x DVD+RW drive

The kit greatly reduces the temperatures due to the severity of the condition of the heatsink's original base.

    Pros and Cons

    Pros

    • Excellent heatsink finish once completely sanded and polished.

    • Good temperature improvements if lapped properly.

    • Everything you need is included in the kit.

    • Glass backing plate and thermal paste included.

    • Simple to do. Instructions and tips are easy to follow.

    • Paper may last long enough to lap multiple heatsinks.

    • Can be used on processor's Integrated Heat Spreaders.

    • Refill kits (extra sandpaper) can be purchased for $6.

    Cons

    • Expensive; the sand papers alone cost very little, and thermal paste is very cheap.

    • Grit levels are sometimes not printed on the papers (must use colors in instructions).

    • Lapping takes a lot of time to get good results.

    • It may take multiple attempts to get perfect finish.

    Conclusion

Using the Easy PC Kits to lap the base of my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 heatsink has increased the performance of the unit by removing the imperfections that had been created during the machining of the heatsink from the factory. That’s exactly what this kit was meant to do. It removed most of the imperfections from the base, thus decreasing system temperatures.

The Easy PC Kits heatsink lapping kit is very expensive, considering the price of the materials. But if you are unable to find the appropriate papers for whatever you may need to lap, and don’t mind spending a few extra dollars, this kit is perfect for you. Stop by their online store and pick up your kit today.
