Easy PC Kits Premium Heatsink Lapping Kit - Preparations
(Page 3 of 6 )
Lapping a heatsink can get very messy. The fine particles that are removed from the base of the heatsink can stain clothes, so you may want to set up your workspace with a lot of paper towels and wear an old T-shirt.
Since the sand paper is wet/dry, you will need a small container of water and a few paper towels for removing debris from the base of the heatsink during each step of the lapping process.
During the polishing process, you will need a fine, damp cloth for applying compound or for rubbing by hand. An orbital buffing pad could also be used to speed up the polishing process.

The original base of the Freezer 7 is very rough. You can clearly see many deep grooves in the base.
Before you begin lapping away at the heatsink, you may want to put a micro-bevel on the outer edge of the bottom surface, take a flat blade or some coarse sandpaper, and sand the corners of the heatsink. This will help prevent any tearing of the paper during the lapping process.
Once you prepare your work area and get all of the appropriate materials needed together, you are ready to begin lapping your heatsink. This process will consume the better part of three hours, depending on the condition of the heatsink and your skills. Take your time while lapping; feel free to take a few breaks, because your arms could very well get sore. My arms are getting sore just thinking about it!
