Year 2007 Preview: Predictions and Rumors - Motherboards and Chipsets
(Page 4 of 4 )
Intel has big plans for the chipset market industry. Three newer chipsets should be released in 2007. The first one is a chipset supporting DDR3 1066 named G/P35; it will also support FSB of 1333MHz. The G/P35 is going to replace the current G/P965s. The second one is called G33; it should replace the G/P945-946s, and it supports DDR2 800. The last one is the X38; it will support PCI-E 2.0 and DDR3 memories.
What we know about the G35 chipset line is that it will be DirectX 10 compatible. That's going to be huge. Think about it for a moment... to have DX 10 compatible integrated video processing power to enjoy Vista to the maximum. Let's all hope that Intel can build really high performance integrated video chipsets, or at least decent ones.
In the notebook area, AMD will pull out Turions with an integrated Radeon video chipset solution. Intel's combination is Merom with G965. Now the question is, how will Intel's integrated video perform? Apparently the G965 are a bit lower-end. Intel's integrated video chipset solutions are almost a bit lower performing when compared with the competitors. Anyway, these should change.
AMD will also be releasing newer chipsets, of course. One of those will be the RD790 that should be released early this year. It's going to have 3 PCI-E x16 slots, one PCI-E 4x slot, socket F and AM2 support (some rumors say only 1207 F but we'll see). Also we can't forget about DirectX 10 support.
PCI-E 2.0 is expected this year. Technically it should be twice as fast as its predecessor.
Conclusions
We've came to the end of my expectations for this year. All of the described events should happen in the near future, but technical specifications may change as far as code names, architectures or platforms. It's clear enough that, just as so many new releases happened in 2006, we will see many releases in 2007. AMD's acquisition of ATi should overpower them. Nvidia is struggling to make their top end products, while Intel is working hard, investing a lot to accomplish future plans.
Too many rumors, speculations, expectations and ambiguous predictions are spread all over the Internet, to be honest; we can't know anything for sure until the exact moment when it's released officially. But I hope I've given you some idea of what to expect from this year.
