XP vs. Vista - Crysis and Conclusion

I’m sure the title has gotten your interest at this point. I normally don’t like testing demos of games before the actual games are released, but this I feel is worth it, as people are building games around this game alone. I tested this game with the built-in CPU and GPU benchmarks that can be found in the game folders.

First, we take a look at the CPU results. These results are in line with what we have previously seen with CPU performance. There’s a nice size difference between the two results. Even with Vista’s bloating, I doubt that is the whole reason for this gap. There has to be some missing holes in the programming. I hope the final version of this game will see this gap decrease some.

The GPU results also show an advantage for XP. This really surprised me. How can a next generation game play best on a last generation operating system? I would consider this the first Direct X 10 game that is a must have, and unless you’re playing at "very high" settings, you are better off with XP.

    Conclusion

We still don’t have equal performance between Vista and XP. Even though XP won in most of these tests, it isn’t the end of the world for Vista yet. Games are still very playable and the benchmarks aren’t terrible. Vista has been out for about a year so far and things seem to be coming along very slowly. These tests were done without Vista's service pack; we can hope that it delivered a performance bump.

While Vista does in fact consume many more resources, the infant status of the drivers doesn’t help any. Is it time to upgrade to Vista yet? I would go ahead and join the Vista bandwagon. I would even go as far as getting rid of XP all together, if your hardware can handle it. If 5-10 FPS makes a difference in your playability, then make sure when you get Vista that you also get its SP1.

I have a little bit of news on Windows 7, or the next version of Windows that will hit the market. Microsoft is going a different route with this release. No longer will they be hogging the resources with their processing. They are cutting the fat and skimming down Windows after some bloating from XP and Vista. While you won’t see the next version of Windows until 2010, it’s nice to know things have taken a turn in a different direction. Your next upgrade may cause less stress on your PC.
