World Wide Developers Conference 2008 - Apple 2008

The only update was to the iPhone, and that left the iPods, MacBooks, Mac Pros, Minis and the rest of Apple's hardware untouched. I don't think that it will be a year before we see any updates to the rest of Apple's hardware. Here are some things to look forward to for the remainder of the year.

The iPod Classic and iPod Nano are both due for an upgrade sometime this year.  The Nano could use a memory upgrade, maybe some new colors. As for the Classic, I think that it is in a really good spot. You could throw a bigger hard drive in it, but I think you're already tapping out most people's music collections. The future is really with the iPod Touch and Nano now. If the iPod Touch can get up to 120 GB, I say kill the Classic.

As far as the computers are concerned, I would hold off on the Mac Mini. It's way overdue for a upgrade and I'm sure one will happen in the near future. Perhaps a quad core? Apple has lost some of the appeal of the Mini and the quad core would keep it in the game still.

Your other Macs are pretty safe for now. If you are planning on upgrading in six months or so, I would hold off.  At the end of 2008 or early 2009 Intel will be bringing a whole new core out that will crush their current offerings. Mac Pros will surely get this upgrade and perhaps the MacBook Pro as well. I'm not sure about the rest, due to heat; more information will be available closer to launch of the new CPU.

The displays are probably safe for the time being. If there is an update, it will be to lower the price; I don't see any new designs coming any time soon. I hope this helps you with your Apple buying decisions.

    Conclusion

WWDC 2008 was pretty uneventful for me. I knew the new iPhone was coming, and that the SDK was going gold, with enterprise solutions for the iPhone as well. Outside of that there was the .me account, aka .mac v2, and Snow Leopard, which doesn't offer any great features.

The iPhone was a huge thing, but everyone knew about it and saw it coming. As far as being surprised, few were. Hopefully Apple will still sneak something new into this year, but their products are pretty much settling in nicely with what they could offer. The only hardware due for a big change is the Mac Mini.  Other than that, no product is really worth the wait for an upgrade.
