    Wiiware Games Review - LostWinds

LostWinds is a Wiiware game that invokes players to use their Wii remotes in order to manipulate winds to solve puzzles and challenges. LostWinds pits Toku, a villager of the island Mistralis against the evil Balasar. Balasar is a villainous force who wishes to take over the island of Mistralis and it is Toku’s duty to stop him with the help of the wind spirit, Enril. Toku’s quest to defeat Balasar is accomplished by gathering parts of the wind spirit that are scattered throughout the landscape.

Players control the LostWinds’ protagonist, Toku, by using the nunchuk’s analog stick. Just as if it was a 2D game, Toku simply walks from left to right and is void of any real “action moves.” As the game’s name indicates, LostWinds game play focuses on using the Wii remote to control and combine gusts of wind in order to solve puzzles. Players are challenged to think of the best ways of combining the wind gusts to make Toku float through the air. Although this sounds simplistic it can become very fun after a while.

Graphics-wise, LostWinds really stands out, especially when you consider that it is just a downloadable game with a relatively small file size. While the game operates and plays like a 2D game, it does have 3D backgrounds that include interactive landscaping. For example, moving the Wii remote over trees and bushes will cause them to move as if they have just been hit by a gust of wind. One negative on the LostWinds graphics front is a frame rate problem that occurs at times if there is too much action on the screen. This only happens periodically, however, and the game’s beautiful scenery more than makes up for this annoying little quirk.

Overall, LostWinds is a very enjoyable download. The premise is simple but it is enough to keep you entertained. The graphics are very smooth for such a relatively small download. One problem is that since LostWinds is just a downloadable game, it lacks options and can be entirely finished and defeated within a few hours. The game was a good time, though, and at only $10 is well worth the download.
