What has Sony Been up to Lately? - Sugar-Powered Battery

    Sugar-Powered Battery

Sony has recently developed a prototype of an environmentally-friendly battery that is powered by regular old sugar.  The battery case is about 1.5 inches long and is made out of a vegetable-based plastic.  The battery works by pouring a sugar solution into it where enzymes break it down and create electricity.  Sony claims that their prototype battery produces 50 milliwatts of power, which is enough to power an MP3 player and a pair of speakers.

Potential advantages of this battery are that it could be completely renewable, because you could just fill it with more of the sugar solution to create more electricity.  Another advantage is the environmentally-safe aspect of this battery.  This battery uses all natural substances that are safe for the environment, and it would also reduce the amount of alkaline batteries polluting our land fills, ground water, etc.

Sony plans on releasing these batteries for commercial use, but there is no release date as of yet. The big disadvantage, as you can see from these pictures, is the battery's size.
