Final Thoughts
To me, Ooma is a company that will help mold the future of telecommunications. For the small business, this service could be priceless. The idea of having no monthly charges for phone service is amazing to me, and I really hope that Ooma, or similar companies, succeed at their goal. If they do succeed, it will benefit the consumer greatly. Who wouldn't like to save an extra $40, $50, or $60 per month on phone charges?
The first year of Ooma service to the public is going to be crucial to the success of this innovative company. I'm sure there will be bugs that will need to be addressed, as there are with every start-up company. As long as these bugs are fixed quickly without disrupting service, I think that Ooma will slowly begin to grow a strong customer base due to good service and quality.
There are many questions which still need to be answered about the quality of service that will be offered by Ooma. Many of these questions can only be answered through trial and error. At the time of this writing, it was an open question as to the call quality we could expect or even if Ooma could withstand the powerful competition of the big phone service providers. I think it will initially be very tough for Ooma to get customers to purchase a $399 phone not knowing whether Ooma will be around a year from now. Customers may just be throwing away that $400 for all we know at this point.
Even with all of the risk, the whole idea makes a lot of sense. You can not argue with the numbers. There is no doubt that if Ooma succeeds, there is a lot of money to be saved in the long run. For me, I will keep a close eye on Ooma for the next year or two, and if they are doing well at that point I may be willing to fork out the dough and end my monthly phone charges forever.
