VoIP with Free Phone Service for Life - Service

    What Services Does Ooma Provide?

Ooma has pledged to provide unlimited calls to anyone in the United States for free. They charge just pennies per minute for international calls, depending on what country you are calling. During the initial start-up phase of Ooma's services, they required customers to have a landline, but currently no landline is required.

When signing up with Ooma, the customer will receive the following features and benefits:

    • Unlimited calling in the US, with no monthly fees - for life.

    • Instant Second Line™ feature - gives every user access to a second line in their home, with no installation or new phones.

    • Three-way conferencing.

    • Broadband Answering Machine™ - combines the power of voice mail with the ease-of-use of an answering machine.

    • Ooma Lounge - an online site where you will be able to access and save your voice messages.

    • Reliable 911 service - you can place 911 calls even if your Internet connection or power in your home is down.

The Ooma hub, which is required, was supposed to be available for $399 for only a limited time, and jump to $599 soon after the initial launch. Currently, it looks like you can still get the hub for $399. In addition to the cost of the Ooma hub, customers will need to purchase Ooma scouts, which are a bit smaller than the hub and are used to put phones in other rooms of the house. These scouts will cost $39 a piece. So for a customer who needs three phones, they will need to purchase the Ooma hub and two Ooma scouts, which would be a grand total of $477 at the introductory prices.

The initial cost of setting up service through Ooma seems a bit extreme for a company that hadn't proved anything to the consumers at the time it started up. Without a track record of good service, it would be hard for me personally to hand over about $500 to a company that could possibly go belly-up within a year or so. As I said earlier, it is a great risk, but I think the people at Ooma are onto something big here.
