VoIP: How it Works, Why to Use it - VoIP Benefits
(Page 2 of 4 )
Now that I have made it seem like VoIP is the worst idea ever, I'll share all the great things about VoIP that make it really a worthwhile investment. First, this is a fairly new technology, so things are still being developed for VoIP, such as protocols that would allow the packets to be read in the correct order no matter how they are received.
There are currently a few kinds of encryption in the works and being implemented with VoIP. It is just a matter of time until these new methods get implemented in the standard VoIP connection. Faxes and other data connections that go through the phone line, such as TIVO, are hit or miss right now on VoIP. With a redesign of protocols and the standard in the protocol for data to be sent and not just audio, data will work flawlessly.
The biggest reason people are flocking to VoIP over traditional phone lines is due to the price. Gone are many of the long distance charges for calling foreign countries. Many providers offer free calling to Europe or Asia. If you have a loved one out of the country, you know how much it costs to call them; the charges add up every minute you talk.
Due to the way a traditional phone line works compared to a VoIP phone, VoIP connections take up a third to a quarter of the amount of bandwidth needed for the traditional phone. This is good for both the consumer and producer. VoIP companies save on bandwidth, which makes it cheaper for them; for consumers, I could have three phones in use at the same time through one connection and have them operate just fine. This is great if you have kids that love to tie up the phone line for hours on end.
