    Toshiba threw in the towel on the HD-DVD format, leaving Sony as the winner in the war, with Blu-ray. This article takes one last look at both formats, replays the war, and wonders just how long the winner will hold its place in the market. How soon is the next generation in video formats coming over the horizon, and what is it?

    Rise of the next VHS

    I have covered next generation formats over and over again. I have given you insight into the two most popular formats, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray media, and also some other formats that never really got started. The one aspect I couldn't provide at that time is which one was going to be the next generation format.

    Until recently the race was too close to decide. The demand in the market was about equal for both of them, and neither wanted to give up market share. Each had a few major movie studios and neither seemed to getting anywhere. I was beginning to shake my head and say "oh great, we 're going to have two formats and need two players to watch movies." One blockbuster movie would come out on one format, and another on the other. Well the war took a serious turn recently and it looks like we have a winner this year. Read on!
