Television Without a Tuner - Conclusions
Television entered our lives in the second part of the twentieth century, offering a fast and secure source of information. It remained there firmly until the arrival of high-speed Internet, which opened up new possibilities. Nowadays, more and more people use the Internet when they look for the daily news.
Being aware of this, broadcasters started to migrate to the Internet, because it’s a standard technological evolutionary process - surviving is a must. As we found out from this article, the road has just been laid down. The potential of this service hasn't been fully explored yet.
The quality of the flux offered in most cases is reduced to the QCIF resolution, which is far behind, even when we compare it to the analog sign (720 X 576). This limitation is caused by the limited bandwidth of the servers. The solution may lay in multicast or, hopefully, the P2PTV. But both of them are just at the start, so a good period of time is still necessary until any kind of result can be observed.
As for the applications reviewed in this article, the situation isn’t any different. Improvements are expected all over the place. If we look over the existing items, collecting all of the fluxes in a single application is harder than it seems. The lack of really good software can be explained by the fact that the legal status of taking over a flux emitted by a different company is still an issue.
International licensing agreements are a problem to be resolved. Another point worth considering is that the quality and availability of the fluxes can’t be guaranteed by the producer. And we all can agree that the success of this kind of product correlates directly with this issue.
Until the producers find a way to resolve these problems, we’ll have to stick with what we have and choose from it. But if you are in pursuit of exceptional quality, you'd better go back to cable TV (analog or digital) or even better, to IPTV or DBS (direct broadcast satellite, if owning a satellite dish doesn’t scare you away).
I really hope that you liked this sort of article and until the next time, I wish you a great day. Don't forget, if you have any questions regarding this article or any IT-related issue, don’t hesitate to visit our friendly and ever-growing “DevHardware Forums” community.
