Stand Alone versus Cell Phone Based GPS: Which is Right for You?
Have you been thinking about purchasing a global positioning system (GPS) device, but aren't sure which ones represent the best deal? Price is far from the only factor you'll need to take into consideration. For example, there are at least two different approaches to GPS on the market, each with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. This article will help you figure out what questions you need to ask and priorities you need to set when shopping for a GPS device that will suit you.
If either your work or play compel you to spend a lot of time on the road, then a GPS is probably something that you have been craving. Then again, you could just have a less-than-stellar sense of direction, and that is your reason for wanting a GPS system. Either way, now that the GPS systems on the market are coming down to a more reasonable price, more and more people are deciding that getting a GPS in one form or another is something that they want to do.
There are a lot of factors that play into this decision. Today we are going to take a look at some of these factors and find out which of the GPS options is the right one for you. We will be looking at factors like price, coverage for the systems and the lifestyle factors that may influence you in one direction or the other.
Before we begin, let's take a look at what exactly the two things we are comparing mean. After all, there is no point in creating more confusion on the subject.
A stand alone GPS device is one that does only GPS and nothing else. They usually come with a plug to charge in your cigarette lighter and software for your computer.
A phone-based GPS is a bit misleading. While you will often find these programs on cell phones, this is not the only place where you will find them. For our purposes this refers to any piece of software that will act as a GPS that has been put onto a device with other features. In addition to cell phones, you may also find these types of applications on your PDA or even on an iPod Touch.
Now that we have gotten that out of the way we can start with one of the most pressing concerns for the average shopper, the price of the systems.
