Sony, a Fiasco in the Making? - A Question of Face
(Page 4 of 4 )
Sony has lost quite a lot of face (credibility) among manufacturers and its other customers. Even in Japan, Fujitsu and Toshiba have also recalled batteries. A large customer base is under threat. This is one area that will require almost a miracle for Sony to recover from.
Other Fronts
The Blu-ray vs. HD DVD standards battle recently went overt. Combined with the above situations, Sony finds itself at what could very well be its defining point. Nonetheless, however bad things get, Sony still has a large customer base for its electrical/electronics products. It is one of the top three cellular phone makers (the Sony Ericsson series), and makes batteries for other items which are not experiencing explosions such as camcorders and portable DVDs. However, only time will tell whether the situation has stabilized or if there is still a threat of recalls of other consumer electronics items powered by Sony batteries.
Sony's shares have been reflecting the bad news. From September to October, Sony's shares dropped from US$44 to US$38. This is not the worst it has been, since they were as low as US$31 in the past 55 weeks or so. Sony has not been a stock for those that like their shares stable, and nobody is taking any guesses as to whether it is going south or north (neutral means it can go anywhere). The PlayStation should be some good news, since the Xbox has not proved itself able to dislodge Sony in Japan, but the Wii is to be watched -- it may just prove to be the undoing of the PlayStation brand. But as for me (a lover of gadgets) I do hope the Sun never sets on Sony's day.
