Podcasting Matures with Pod-Conference - And What About 2006?

Tim Bourquin had expected maybe 1,000 people to show up for his conference, he got 2,500, from about 20 countries. He must have been delighted. Though he makes his living organizing conferences, he is a podcaster by avocation, doing a regular show with his brother called – what else? – the Podcast Brothers.

Next year’s even, he says, will be bigger and better. As mentioned above, he has already reserved the same convention center he used this year for next year’s conference, and he will have more space. He apparently wants to avoid some of the problems that came up this year. “We were sold out this time, and lots of people couldn’t attend the sessions they wanted to,” he explained.

Bourquin is making plans based on this year’s attendees. There were two groups of people who came to the conference: those who simply wanted to do better podcasts and meet other podcasters, and those associated with corporations or interested in doing corporate podcasting that would put companies in a good light. To serve both of these groups, next year’s conference will be more structured – and will probably feature even more panels and programming.

Instead of four panels every hour, next year’s show will probably feature five or six “tracks” of programming. These tracks will explore topics of interest to the two separate groups. “One for the hobbyists, one for the business side of things,” Bourquin elaborated. “With more room, we’ll be able to break it down.”

"We had two groups of people attending," he said. The first was folks who just want to do better podcasts and who wanted to meet other podcasters. Then there were the corporate folks who work for companies which want to get into podcasting and do it in a way that puts them in a good light."

Bourquin said next year's show, scheduled for Sept. 29 and 30, will be more structured. "We'll probably be creating 'tracks', maybe five or six," with programming that caters to various interests, "One for hobbyists, one for the business side of things. With more room, we'll be able to break it down." My guess? Attendees will be wishing even more that they could be in several places at once.
