Since the initial development of thin, bendable batteries about 10-15 years ago, many other companies have started research and development on their own version of this revolutionary product. NEC is one of these companies which introduced their thin and flexible battery in late 2005. They called their battery "ORB," which stands for Organic Radical Battery, and they claim that 1 square centimeter of this material would give you about 1 milliwatt of power. They also say that this material can be recharged in only 30 seconds. NEC is further developing this technology to expand on the applications available for it.
With thin batteries already in commercial use, it is easy to see them expanding into our everyday lives very soon. They have the ability to make our portable devices smaller, lighter, and may even power them longer, while recharging faster. This technology is not that far off in our future. It will surely be embraced by the public because of its "green" aspects. Most of these thin batteries are made of organic, safe materials, and in many applications they will help to minimize waste. It sounds like a win-win situation to me.
