Online Recycling - Easy ways to sell
Once they reach this scale, LETS systems have gone far beyond a simple way of exchanging unwanted possessions. And in many cases people would rather receive hard cash than local currency or somebody else's rejected items in exchange for their own possessions. There are a number of online initiatives that make this possible without having to enter the maelstrom of eBay and its imitators.
One such is the Amazon Reseller program. This system makes it just about as easy as it could be to sell a whole range of articles from books and CDs to cameras and sports equipment online. Listing an item is free of charge, although it is subject to a commission when it sells. Signup is simple, and Amazon has made listing a book, for example, as straightforward as entering its ISBN into a dialog box.
Given the number of duplicate and unread books in circulation, the spiraling popularity of the Amazon Reseller program is no surprise. What is less expected is the sheer range of items on offer from private sellers, and because unlike eBay it's not an auction, there are no listing fees and no bidding. The item simply stays in the Amazon system at a fixed price until it either sells or is removed by the seller.
The program does have certain limitations. One of the biggest disadvantages is it may be difficult to sell common or low-value items, as the system is often overloaded with large numbers of these at extremely competitive prices. Anything slightly more unusual, however, is likely to attract a buyer with little difficulty.
Amazon may be one of the biggest, but it is not the only major online retailer to have developed a service dedicated to providing sales opportunities to private individuals. In December 2008 the European corporation play.com launched its own recycleagift.com site, targeted specifically at people hoping to sell unwanted Christmas gifts. A launch offer of ten free listings was included to encourage people to use the system, which operates almost identically to the Amazon service with no listing fees and the ability to handle most entertainment-related items.
As the rapid rise of initiatives such as the Amazon Reseller and Recycle A Gift schemes illustrates, the popularity of giving, trading or selling stuff online has never been greater. So what are you waiting for? It's time to start searching through those drawers and cupboards and finding new homes for your clutter. And with so many web sites offering all sorts of goodies for free, you should have no trouble at all filling up your brand new empty space.
