Next Decade of Technology
This last decade created some pretty remarkable technologies that have changed our lives. Devices such as iPods, GPS, DVR, and more all have made their appearance in the past decade. Those are some pretty major devices. Technology is supposed to continue growing, and quickly. What will the next decade bring?
Batteries
Ten years ago, laptops had batteries that lasted a few hours at most. The hardware was pretty power hungry, even though it was mobile. Today we have some nice power-sipping hardware, such as Intel’s Atom processors. These can consume as little as a couple watts of power. My netbook with a Core 2 Solo SU3500 can keep me running all day and more on a single charge. That is really impressive for 10 years, and cell phones have had similar changes.
For the next decade, expect more battery life. There are already new battery technologies that are in the works for computers. Expect to see batteries last for days and not hours on a single charge. My cell phone can already last three days without a charge; I expect this to reach laptop computers, and be a hit.
A bigger hit for batteries than computers will be cars. Car companies are pouring money into research and development for batteries, and this technology should also find its way into computers later on.
I really hope that we see wireless charging and power transmissions going on by 2020. We have seen quite a few demos of it happening, and there are some devices that charge devices wirelessly, though at this point it’s limited and needs something put on the battery to charge. I would like to see every device charge, and quickly.
One part of the battery revolution that will quickly change is disposable batteries. We are crying over greenhouse gases, but we can throw away dozens of batteries per person every year. Expect to see more and better rechargeable batteries, and perhaps even the general use of ONLY rechargeable batteries, soon.
