Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (MGS4) - OMG! Enough with the In-Game Video!

In-game video today is way out of control, in my opinion, period. And MGS4 is a shining example of this continued trend in my video games.

In my opinion, a game should be a game, not half movie, half game. If I wanted to watch a made-up story, I would go watch television, which is pretty much what I am doing anyway, when not working or playing games. This game IS a prime example, one that is so bad at one point I skipped five sets of video, saved my game, then skipped four more sets of video and then had to save it again. That’s nine sets of video. Estimated time to watch? Forty-five to fifty minutes! Fifty minutes from ending one playable area, before I could begin the next. It was at this point where I quickly began skipping all the videos, because to put it simply, I DON’T CARE.

I don’t care about what made-up planet everyone is from. I don’t care what the primary export is. I don’t need any force-fed video to keep me entertained in the game. I already know the back story, having played and won all the others, and I really don’t need a social and political update. Just let me shoot something or figure something out. Now there’s no doubt the production and quality is great, but you know what else would be great? Another couple of levels………

When did we get to the point where we just fill up our game disks with as much video as it will hold? Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I know it’s an entertainment medium, but you PLAY games, you shouldn’t have to WATCH games. Thank God for the skip button, I can say that.

For the first 30 minutes of play, 27 of those were spent watching videos. I’m sure it was very complicated to generate; it does look fabulous. It's not as though it’s boring, it’s that I simply don’t care. It’s why I can’t stand playing RPGs. I do not have an unlimited amount of time to waste, so when I play games, I would like to actually play them.

If you can get past the flaws I mentioned, you will definitely enjoy this installment of Metal Gear Solid. If you have played the previous releases in this series, you already know you want to play this one. Enjoy!
