Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (MGS4)
To be completely honest with you, I had already pretty much decided to love Metal Gear Solid 4 when I tried to pre-order it about 8 months ago. I just didn’t know why yet. Did I regret that decision? Keep reading to find out.
This is not to say I wouldn’t have been immediately ready to write a scathing review if I felt it let me down in some way. Yes, I have played and won all the others, and every one of them was everything I could have hoped for at that time.
So, upon booting up, and seeing what was to be seen, I said to myself, “Wow, Metal Gear Solid 4, wow!” Now I should say this is the first high definition game I have played, so that probably accounts for a large portion of how incredible the game looks.
The first thing I noticed was the incredible life-like face and body structures of the characters. Background landscapes are fantastic as well, ranging from deep/dank internal strongholds rife with those pesky, scattering scorpions to lush, half-burned, metal-riddled and crater pockmarked hillsides. Weather plays an interesting part in the game, from high wind speeds affecting shooting (barely, but nonetheless) to whiteout blizzard conditions requiring night and heat vision.

Metal Gear Solid was an easy install, quickly opening with great quality videos and then an initially slower training mission to help ease a player back into the world of Solid, Liquid and now, 4.5 years later, “Old Snake,” complete with gray hair, crows feet and general constitution that has definitely aged since the last release. Commonly squatting and placing a hand against the small of his back as if in pain, a slow sigh shows our favorite character aging just like the rest of us. But, as you might expect, his aim has not faltered, especially with the tons of new weapons and items geared toward reclaiming the world from these still-around, metal foes.
