Madden 09 for the PS3

Fall is upon us, and that can only mean one thing: it is football season once again. With football season each year comes a staple of almost every sports gamers’ diet: the Madden football series, and this year's edition, Madden 09 for the PS3. Is it worth getting? Keep reading to find out.

Many people argue that there is not enough differentiation from year to year in the Madden series to warrant a purchase, but fanatics of both football and the series itself do not seem to care. Each year there are new tweaks to the game as well as new rookies and players on different teams. Besides, how fun would it be to play an older Madden game that does not even have updated rosters?
There is no need to fret with Madden 09 though, as this edition comes with some tweaks to the already strong Madden gameplay and the excellent graphics engine. Madden 09 for the PS3 can currently be purchased for $59.99.
Perhaps the biggest tweak to the Madden series in the 2009 edition is the introduction of the My Skill setting. This is a setting that gauges your strengths and weaknesses in playing and adjusts the difficulty settings of the game accordingly. My Skill setting is diagnosed when you begin Madden 09. The game puts you through four different challenges to assess your skill level and then applies those statistics when you play in games from that point on.
In essence, My Skill can definitely help you fine tune your skills, as the AI in the game will become progressively harder versus your strengths. For example, if you excel at passing and continue to get better game after game, the AI will turn up a notch and make it harder for you to pass. This of course can make you adjust and improve your passing, but it can also lead to some frustration. Just because you do well with a player in a certain aspect of the game doesn’t necessarily mean the computer should make it harder for you to succeed.
This setting can help strengthen your skills though, and is handy for those who will eventually take to the gridiron in online gameplay versus others. If you find that the My Skill setting gets too difficult for your taste, you can adjust the settings to where you feel comfortable in terms of pass defense, rush defense, etc. The My Skill setting is something new for the Madden series, and while it is not perfect, at least you have the chance to readjust your personal settings to counteract it.
