Leaner Computing: Less Might be More - Tell Me What You Think

I'm ready for some flaming. If Joe Sixpack wises up, that means little Jimmy won't have all that excessive power left over for his gaming. I'd like to say, "tough nuts, go outside", but that's just not a popular viewpoint, is it? Suppose these types of home PCs take off, and everyone from Transmeta to Via to AMD gets in on this game? After all, this is really the only market they could compete in. As opposed to who can make the fastest processor, it's more who can make the cheapest one. While Intel does have the economy of scale in their favor, do they REALLY want to play here? Especially if they get competition from others trying to lowball them and stretch profits even leaner? I'm not so sure. But I know what that would do. It would make these types of PCs very, very cheap. So much so, that Joe Sixpack could have one of these for general computing duties, and leave the games to the Xbox, PS2, or for those with more $$$, a full on Dell XPS or home built "luxury" type computer.
With the re-emergence of technologies such as SLI and the grotesque cost of top end video cards and CPUs, that market really is trying hard to separate itself and create an upper niche. The computer market is almost starting to resemble the vehicles parked on the driveways of my street. Nearly every one has an SUV for "soccer mom" duties that costs an exhorbitant amount, and there is also a cheap runabout for city transport. You think the makers of silicon don't see what Ford and GM have right now, and don't want in on that game? Absolutely they do; I'm just hoping people realize there are the equivalent of economy cars out there, and they do get the job done just as efficiently.
