It`s a Mod Mod World: Case and Found Object Modding - Case Modding

Case Modding
Case modding, unlike found object modding, takes an existing computer case and transforms it into a unique and one of a kind computer case. Case modding is often see as the next logical step for the do-it-yourself computer user; especially those who build their own systems. After the hours spent installing all their carefully selected hardware and software a number of builders are disappointed that their “custom rig” can still get lost in the shuffle at a LAN party. Much like the world of motorcycles and street racers the case modder has a vision for their carefully built computer and will gladly put in ten times the number of hours it took to install their hardware achieving it.
Case modding, like scratch-built or found-object modding, is an art form that reaches across many mediums. Not only is it an amazing collection of engineering and electronics it also reaches into the realms of sculpture and painting. Finding a balance between all these mediums is the world of the case modder.
As case modding has grown more and more common the amount of off-the-shelf modding materials available has grown exponentially. From neon cold cathode lights to chromed fan grills to anodized fans the choices for the DIY case modder has increased significantly from the earliest days of its inception.
Some of the best case mods are not just pretty to look at but also very utilitarian in their design. Modders will often relocate front USB and audio jacks to better accommodate their design vision or completely redesign the case to accommodate these handy features. Other utilitarian considerations in a case mod include improving air flow and, thus, making the modded case superior to its original source. By installing new front controls, improving the cooling of the case, or adding in various tertiary considerations like built-in network routers or fan controllers the modder is not just doing cosmetic touches to a case but providing after-market upgrades to a relatively neglected part of computers.
The case has always been seen as just a housing for your various components and the color or style of the case has always been a far distant second to its contents. Many computer users will argue that the color of the case does not in any way impact its performance and they would be completely correct. However, case modding is not just about changing the color of the case of adding graphics. Its about improving on the product and adding a strong personal flavor to the computer that will be housed inside it.
One case modder who has turned his love of modding into a thriving modding parts supply store is Bill Owen of Mnpctech (www.mnpctech.com). His skills as a premiere case modder has grown to such a degree that his site is literally jammed full with the diverse examples of his work modding cases.
