It`s a Mod Mod World: Case and Found Object Modding - Scratch Built Modding

Scratch modding, on the other hand, is found object modding taken a step further. Scratch built mods require you to not only provide all of the same interior skills and knowledge for your actual hardware installation but also requires a true craftsmen to build the entire outer housing that holds it all in place and protects it from the elements.

Both Paul Capello and Mashie provide plenty of examples of the amazing looks and results that can be achieved by scratch building your mod. Mashie’s Y2K Bug (pictured below) is an excellent example of a free-form scratch-built mod using a range of materials from carbon fibre to sculpted Milliput to achieve his final design. While the hours that go into a project like the Y2K Bug are significantly greater than that of a case mod it is obvious that the end results are of significantly higher caliber than what is achieved with many case mods.

Paul Capello, however, really redefined the concept of scratch-built modding with his Matrix mods. In particular Mr. Capello introduced a whole range of new ideas to scratch built modding including the use of an animatronic puppet that, at the push of a button, moves its arms and legs inside its embryonic shell.

The Matrix series of mods (more of which can be seen at www.thebestcasescenario.com) represent a new pinnacle in case modding and significant leap forward for this medium of expression. Featured on countless magazine covers, books, and websites; Mr. Capello has proven himself to be a leader in the modding community with his amazing creations for companies like Intel and VIA to showcase their products. Mr. Capello is well known for the diversity of materials involved in his modding projects. In his Metropolis project he used stacked and spaced sheets of Lexan for the elongated tower base of his construction while on his Jujube project he utilized an impressive area of materials from his local hardware store.

Scratch-built and found object modding represent the highest degrees of skill and craftsmanship within the fledgling modding community. These types of projects require the greatest amount of imagination and dedication and most certainly not for the faint-hearted.
