Highlights From the 2007 E3 Convention - Sony

    Sony

I wasn't as impressed with Sony's press conference as I was with Microsoft's.  There was some good information released, though, and I will share some of the key points that executives at Sony spoke about at their E3 press conference.

Sony began their press conference by talking a little about the new price of the PS3, set at $499. They also said that they would have a new 80 GB version of the PS3 which would soon be available, and it would be great for online game play because of the larger hard drive. They also talked a lot about PlayStation Home which looks like something that PlayStation will be expanding upon greatly.

PlayStation Home is available via the PlayStation Network, and it is a virtual
world where you can create a character and interact with other members. You can even play any PS3 game with anyone inside this virtual world. Sony also created a cool new function which allows you to upload pictures from your cell phone and place them inside your virtual space in Home, much like custom art work.

The PlayStation Network will add 80 new games from now until March of 2008. The top 5 new games are: Echochrome, Wipeout HD, Pain, Warhawk, and Socom Confrontation. The PlayStation Network looks like the future of PlayStation, because it allows you to play games with people all around the world. I like the PlayStation Network a lot, and I love the innovative virtual world called Home.

Sony also talked a bit about the PSP.  hey said that they would be releasing 140 new games this year. Sony announced a new version of the PSP which will be available in September of 2007. This new PSP is 33% lighter and 19% slimmer than the current model. They also claim that the battery life will increase in this new model. There will also be a new feature which allows for one-touch video playback or gameplay onto an HD television through the PSP.

A new entertainment pack for the PSP will soon be available which includes the Dexter game, 1 GB memory, and the Family Guy series. It comes in a special color: Ice silver. Another special edition PSP which will be limited edition is the Star Wars pack which includes Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron, and has a picture of Darth Vader on the back of the PSP. This limited edition pack will be available in October, 2007.

Sony announced the creators of Guild Wars, NC Soft, will be joining the PlayStation team exclusively. Sony also mentioned Ubisoft, which created the game Haze, which will be available this holiday season. Other new exclusive Sony titles include Gran Turismo 5 and  Unreal Tournament. One of the most popular exclusive PlayStation games which was announced was Metal Gear Solid 4. This game will be the final game in this long-standing series of largely successful games.

Some of the other games which Sony spoke about during their press
    conference at E3 2007 were:

    • Call of Duty 4
    • Kane and Lynch
    • Resident Evil 5
    • Burnout Paradise
    • The Simpson's Game
    • Guitar Hero III
    • Medal of Honor

Sony was pushing the virtual world, Home, a lot during their presentation. It looked a bit cheesy at times, but I like the premise of Home and it should be very successful for Sony. They also tried to get the point across about how their discs were Blu-ray discs, which are much higher quality than even HD DVDs. I think this is a big plus for Sony and will help sales of their PS3 and PSP consoles. I didn't like the fact that a lot of the games that Sony spoke about at their press conference were not going to be available in stores until 2008.

I think that is what gives Microsoft the upper hand, in terms of the new game announcements at E3, because all of their announced games were to be released in 2007.
