Highlights From the 2007 E3 Convention
One thing that everyone agrees on regarding the 2007 Electronic Entertainment Expo, is that this year's expo was way different from the 2006 E3. Last year's expo was much more of an extravaganza than the 2007 E3. The 2007 E3 show is a mid-July event which showcases new games and hardware which consumers can look forward to in the near future from the gaming industry's leading platforms including Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.
This year's event did not have the so-called "game babes" in bikinis strutting around the expo. It also didn't sport any ear-piercing noises, fog machines, or laser light shows. The 2007 E3 was much more low key than last year's event.
Many of the people in attendance did not like the new format which was organized by the Electronic Software Association. They wanted to shrink the number of attendees at the 2007 event, and that is just what they did. In
2006, the E3 attracted over 60,000 people who squeezed into the L.A.
Convention Center, but in 2007 this figure was reduced to about 5,000 members of the press, developers, and analysts.
I have read a lot of accounts from this year's E3 from various members of the press and electronic web sites, and most of them have said that they did not like the way in which the 2007 E3 was organized. Many of the press conferences from the major platforms overlapped, or it was impossible to attend consecutive press conferences because they were a 30 minute commute away at a different hotel. Many complained about the schedule of press conferences, and I think that this issue will be addressed at next year's event if the Electronics Software Association wants to keep it as big as it is in terms of exposure for new gaming hardware and games.
Most of you gamers out there don't care about the format or schedule of the E3; you just want to know what is in store for the future of gaming. I want to take a look at the press conferences held by Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, and pick out some of the highlights of each. I will point out some of the biggest games to look forward to, as well as some of the new hardware which will be in stores very soon for your Xbox 360, PS3, or Nintendo Wii.
